Do I need a design before any work starts?
For a single element, usually not. For anything touching grade, drainage, or more than one area of the property, a plan prevents the expensive kind of surprise.
Can the work be phased?
Yes, and it is worth planning that way from the start. Sequencing matters — utilities, drainage, and hardscape need to land before planting and finish work.
