When does a wall need engineering?
Height is the usual trigger, and thresholds vary locally. Surcharge above the wall — a driveway, a slope, a structure — can require it at a lower height.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Almost always water. A wall without drainage behind it is holding back saturated soil, which weighs far more than the design assumed — and in this climate that saturated backfill then freezes and expands against the wall every winter.
