What makes a paver patio last?
In this climate, the base. Southern Ontario runs through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles a season, and water trapped in a shallow or poorly drained base is what lifts and heaves pavers. Pattern and colour are the parts everyone discusses and the parts that matter least to longevity.
Why do patios go uneven after a few winters?
Frost heave, almost always. Water held in the base expands as it freezes and pushes the surface up unevenly. Depth of granular, compaction, and somewhere for water to go are what prevent it.
Can new pavers meet existing concrete?
Often, yes. It depends on grade, the condition of the existing slab, and where water needs to go. That transition is worth resolving at the design stage.
